As a Boy Scout, Ryan attended week long summer camps, participated in winter camping, scouting for food, recycling, adopt a highway and numerous other scouting activities. Ryan was inducted into the Order of the Arrow in 1993, his first year of eligibility. Ryan served as assistant Scoutmaster during 1998-99.

The highlights of Ryan's Scouting experience was his participation in the National Jamboree in Washington, D.C. which he attended with Tony Kleist, Jacob Kleist, and Chris Olson.

Ryan's Eagle project was to clear out and clean up the Paradise Theater. He received assistance from many current and past Boy Scout members and troop leaders.

The success of Ryan's scouting experience was a result of the guidance and assistance he received from Troop Leader John Petroskas, Assistant Troop Leader Steve Dahlin, Bobby Dahlin, and Cindy Kleist.

Ryan D Yankowiak         June 27, 2004

Ryan's trail to Eagle began at his first meeting. There was never any question that he would become and Eagle Scout. Early on, his leadership was recognized by those around him; he served as Senior Patrol Leader, or Assistant Senior Patrol Leader for several years!

The Troop's trek to Sea Base in the Florida Keys was but one of Ryan's memorable adventures; he also attended the National Jamboree in Virginia and served as a delegate to the National Order of the Arrow Conference in Tennessee. Ryan summer camped with the troop at Cuyuna, Wilderness, and Phillips Scout Reservation.

Boy Scouts' honor society is the Order of the Arrow; because of his character and leadership, Ryan was elected to membership in Naguonabe Lodge #31, where he is currently a Brotherhood member.

The Eagle Scout Project Ryan selected was to refurbish Sunrise Park in Mora. Trees were replaced, a picnic grill was installed, and parking barriers were set.

An excellent student, Ryan has participated in many school activities, but none so rewarding as his role as tutor to younger students. Ryan has enlisted in the United States Army and will specialize in aviation, where he hopes to become a pilot.

Onward and Upward, Ryan! We are proud to see you follow your dreams! Ryan is the sone of Doug and Randi Yankowiak.

Scout Master Success!!!!

When Boy Scouting started in Mora, we belonged to the North Star Council headquartered in Duluth. The building in Duluth where the boy scout office was located burned, and all of their records were destroyed. Conversations with past leaders has given us this information.

In 1922 Claude Dresser was the scoutmaster and in 1928 Vernon Anderson was scoutmaster. Merrol Larson was assistant scout master and said their first Eagle scout was Lawrence Peterson (name located on the Eagle Scout plaque), son of Mr and Mrs Oscar Marten.

Other scoutmasters were Vernon Smith in 1930, Lloyd Goldsmithin 1942, Orva Hannuin 1945, Kenneth Jacobson in 1950, and Kermit Runquist. The council camp that the boys went to was called Camp Laurie, on Eagle Lake.

In the later 50's Harold Hanson became scoutmaster and during that same time, Mora became part of the Central MN Council, headquarted in St. Cloud. The present council camp is located north of Brainerd near Merrifield. It was called Camp Clyde.  Sometime during the late 60's or 70's the name of the camp was changed to Parker Scout Reservation. It is no longer used for long term (one week or more) camping. Instead a variety of specialty weekend camps are opening it up to more boys, and those with special interests. These range from Cub Scout, Lad-Dad weekends to boy scout aquatics, field sports, and nature weekends.

The registered scoutmasters from the late 50's to the present are as follows. Laird Mork, Mickey Grahek, Kenneth Johnson, Evert Klingberg, Dan Molloy, Jeff Gorham, Howard Clementson, Richard Smith and John Fridstrom. Too numerous to mention are those who served scouting as assistant scoutmasters and committee members, however, they are well remembered by their scouts.

Over the years some of these scoutmasters have accompanied their troops on high adventure trips to Sommers Canoe Base in the boundary waters canoe area and Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. Harold Hanson and Richard Smith have also taken troops to the national jamboree, which occurs only every four years.

A local boy scout, Doug Nute, has been passing scouting on to the boys in Hayfield, MN for about 15 years, now. He has been recognized as state Scouter of the Year.

The sponsoring organization for the Mora Boy Scouts is the American Legion Post #201.

The local boy scouts presently take part in the Mora parade, directing traffic at the Vassaloppet and performing flag ceremonies at community and social events. They collect newspapers, sell Christmass wreaths and participate in numerous outdoor activities associated with scouting.

The strength of our troop in 1982 is 28 scouts, 1 scout master, 1 assistant scout master and 9 members on the committee. According to national and council statistics, scouting is in an upswing, and we can see this in our troop, also.

Go to the "Meet the Leaders" for our CURRENT (2011) Troop Leaders!!!!!

Thanks to Claudia Fridstrom for the research!
